With James Mwere’s passion and vigor, exciting tourists, he has grown from a tour guide to owning a safari company. MJ Safaris offers gorilla trekking experience, wildlife safaris, birding, and cultural tours, nature guides on top of their niche in sports and domestic tourism in Uganda, Rwanda, DR Congo and Tanzania.

Mwere takes advantage of young people to offer adventure packages especially mountain hiking, white-water rafting, zip lining and tubing on River Nile.

He says that few Ugandans are interested in primate safaris attributing it to the perception of Ugandans who prefer to travel abroad especially Dubai and South Africa instead of exploring their country.

“What most people do not know is that beauty is all around us. People organize honeymoons elsewhere yet such places as Ssese Islands, are amazing. When some of my clients go there, most realize they spend a lot of money on artificial sites abroad for nothing,” he says.

Mwere, who wears many hats, is the chairperson of Tour Guides Forum Uganda and a senior tourism officer at the Ministry of Tourism and Heritage, Busoga Kingdom.

His company holds membership for Association of Uganda Tour Operators (AUTO) and Tour Guides Forum Uganda (TGFU). TFGU brings together tour guides and tourist drivers in Uganda.

A charismatic personality, Mwere who is vocal about local tourism, is the brain behind Tulambule, a celebrity-led drive, aimed at encouraging Ugandans to be tourists in their country.

He says that it is important to offer Ugandans an opportunity to appreciate their heritage and nature.

“I am among the pioneers of domestic tourism which in one way has helped us to stamp our feet in the market. It has helped us to create awareness for our company,” Mwere says.

His work has been recognized by peers and no wonder he was a finalist of the EcoTripMatch’s “2020-2021 Best Nature Guide of the Year” award as someone who supports conservation through ecotourism.

In Mwere’s world, tourism is the best job ever because as a tour guide, he is paid to travel.

“When someone wants to visit any place, they will pay you to take them there,” he says.

Sports for tourism

Sports tourism is a fast-growing sector globally but is just taking root in Uganda.

Mwere says rally and football fans are the biggest drivers of sports tourism as they move to various destinations across the country.

In areas that have embraced sports tourism, Mwere says, the benefits are immense when national and international championships are held.

“Sports is one channel we want to use to promote tourism among Ugandans. When you look at motorsport, the fans are the biggest domestic tourists the country has. A calendar of rally events takes us across the country with huge numbers of Ugandans following the events,” Mwere says.

The company were co-sponsors of the recently concluded Kaliro Sugar EMC Rally in Iganga District.

“Whenever we have an opportunity to speak about our country, we have to sell the attractions,” he says.

His company, MJ Safaris were part of the Pool Cranes journey to the All Africa Pool Association Championship where the She Cranes, the women’s team, won gold with Rukia Nayiga becoming the African champion.

Pool is the sport Mwere played competitively as he followed SC Villa as a fan.

“I want the players to get exposure through tourism. I am trying to open up their eyes to get an opportunity that lies in travelling across the country and the continent. Young people must learn about the opportunities their country has to offer yet the sector employs many youths who can venture into becoming tour guides if they know how to drive,” Mwere explains.

“Talent is short-lived but if they can learn other languages, they can add value to their brands,” he says.

An automobile mechanical engineer by training, Mwere started work at former Caltex in Mukono as a service attendant before Lady Luck smiled on him and he joined tourism as a business.

“Caltex used to give us good training in customer service which helped to shape me into a better person,” he says.

Starting out

But starting a company of his own was not straight forward.

In 2008, Hassan Mutebi a tour operator of Access Uganda Tours based in Mukono asked Mwere to join him as a driver.

“I was not sure. I was very skeptical. It took me about two years to realize this was the thing for me,” Mwere says.

When French oil company Total took over Caltex in 2008, Mwere lost his job and had to turn to Mutebi for a job.

In 2010, he was offered his first gig to a five-day bird watching trip to Budongo Forest stopping in Kibale. But his mind was focused on the threat of the ADF rebels who were notorious at the time. Yet when he reached the Primate Lodge, owned by Amos Wekesa, his mind changed forever.

“It was that day when my world changed. I was awed by the place and when I found out that it was owned by a Ugandan, I knew I could get all I wanted through tourism,” he says.

His adventure with Mutebi lasted only four trips as he was considered surplus to the workforce.

“Even then, he was into bird watching and I was not a birder at all. But he could not employ two people at the same time as he had bird watching guides who could drive. Secondly, I came in during the peak and then bookings started to ebb,” Mwere recalls.

He momentarily joined another company but unusual circumstances led him to start his own company.

During one of the trips that had Japanese and American tourists, one of the tourists asked to be taken to Murchison Falls outside the package he had been offered.

Mwere hired a van and when he reached the clerk asked for the details of the tour company bringing the guests. He immediately said MJ Safaris Uganda.

“That is the day the company was born. All receipts were in my company’s name,” he says.

But Mwere continued working for his boss until he received an e-mail from the same gentleman asking him to take his cousin sister for a trip. This was the second time he was billing in the names of MJ Safaris.

In April 2013, he registered his company.

Starting with seven employees, including three female guides, Mwere admits to making mistakes but encourages entrepreneurs to follow their heart and set a strong foundation for their companies.

Niche

“Marketing a tour company is a big hurdle and that is when I realized there was an opportunity to get into sports tourism. It has helped me a lot in growing numbers because people who follow sport can spend and stay,” he says.

Mwere says that there are obvious gaps that need to be fixed in terms of value addition to what fans can be offered.

“Someone travelling to only watch rally cars is not enough. We need to offer tour packages to them such that they can appreciate the places they are visiting. We were in Iganga, for instance, where Kigulu Museum is found but not many fans got to know the value of that museum to Busoga Kingdom. We need to open up people’s eyes depending on where the event is held,” he says.

To effectively do this, there needs to be more involvement by other tour operators and guides as well as government agencies especially the Uganda Tourism Board (UTB), Ministry of Tourism and Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA).

“We need a lot of logistics to carry the message across for people to understand what Uganda has to offer,” Mwere explains.

Culture and Heritage

Cultural tourism is a key offering for Mwere. He admits that it is a key selling product. Working with Busoga Kingdom, he says the established cultural institutions are doing well in promoting tourism.

“We still have a challenge in profiling these sites to make people appreciate Uganda’s cultural heritage,” Mwere says.

In Busoga, he promotes the historical Kaguru Rock, in Buyende District which separates Teso and Busoga.

Tourism is a seasonal business and it takes passion to navigate through the storm. Mwere says that any tour operator’s normal schedules and family time is affected.

“I remember in the first years of my life as a tour guide, I spent four years without celebrating Christmas at home. I never thought of being away on Christmas for four consecutive years. But you know this is the peak of business in tourism. It takes a passionate person,” he says.

Apart from passion, Mwere says the key lies in having the potential by persevering patiently.

“Whether you have the passion, you have to show us the potential that you can do it effectively,” he says.

Most of the business in tourism is by referral from satisfied customers. But according to Mwere, one needs to be up-to-date to satisfy the customers’ expectations.

“Most foreign tourists look at you as an encyclopedia of the destination. They will throw every question at you so you have to be informed,” he says.

Who killed Bishop James Hannington in Uganda?

Bishop James Hannington was born on 3rd September 1847 at Hurstpierpoint in Sussex, England, about eight miles from Brighton, where his father ran a warehouse, and was part of the family that ran Hannington’s Department stores, His father, Charles Smith Hannington, had recently acquired the property known as St. George’s. During Hannington’s childhood, he blew off his thumb with black powder. As a boy, he was a collector.

For Hannington’s early education a tutor had been engaged, but when he was thirteen he was sent to the Temple School at Brighton, where he remained for the next two and a half years, although he was an indifferent student.

Hannington left school at fifteen to work in his father’s Brighton counting-house. He obtained a commission in the 1st Sussex Artillery Volunteers and rose to the rank of major. Under his training and supervision, his detachment won prizes at the annual camp competitions.

In 1867 the chapel which Hannington’s father had built on the grounds of his property was licensed for Anglican services. At twenty-one, Hannington decided to pursue a clerical career and entered university at St Mary Hall, Oxford, He was President of the Red Club and captain of the St. Mary Hall Boat.[1] In 1872, the death of his mother spurred a change in Hannington’s life; he was awarded his B.A., and on 1 March 1874 was ordained as a deacon and took charge of the small parish of St Peter in Trentishoe, Devon. In 1875 James became curate-in-charge at St George’s, Hurstpierpoint where he stayed until volunteering for missionary work in East Africa in 1882. He had by then been married for five years.

Around 1882, Hannington heard of the murder of two missionaries on the shores of Lake Victoria. This led to him offering himself to the Church Missionary Society (CMS) and he left England on 17th May, setting sail for Zanzibar on 29th June, as the head of a party of six missionaries. Crippled by fever and dysentery, Hannington was forced to return to England in 1883.

In June 1884, having recovered, Hannington has ordained bishop of Eastern Equatorial Africa, and in January 1885, at age thirty-seven, Hannington again departed for Africa. His diocese included missions of the CMS on the coast and inland in Buganda. While there Hannington collected a number of shells which were described by E. A. Smith in two papers in the Annals and Magazine of Natural History.

After arriving at Frere town, near Mombasa, in Kenya, Hannington determined to pioneer a shorter and healthier highland road to Buganda, using Christian porters and undercutting the Arab slave route to the south. He was oblivious to the political consequences of traversing Busoga, a strategically sensitive area for the Buganda state. The sudden intrusion of German imperialism at the coast made the Buganda ruler, Kabaka Mwanga, even more, suspicious of Hannington’s motives.An oracle (emmandwa) had said that Buganda’s conqueror would come from the east. Mwanga forbade Hannington from continuing through Busoga eastern region of Uganda and sent boats to take him to Sukuma land, but Hannington refused. Together with his team, he safely reached a spot near Victoria Nyanza on 21st October, but his arrival had not gone unnoticed, and under the orders of King Mwanga II of Buganda kingdom, the missionaries were imprisoned in Busoga by Basoga chiefs by the orders of the Kabaka of Buganda kingdom.

After eight days of captivity, by order from Mwanga II, Hannington’s porters were killed, and on 29th October 1885, Hannington himself was speared in both sides. As he died, his alleged last words to the soldiers who killed him were: “Go, tell Mwanga I have purchased the road to Uganda with my blood and on every 29th of October it’s a national celebration in Uganda. Widespread persecution of Christians followed, many being killed or sold to Arab slavers. Joseph Mukasa Balikuddembe, a Roman Catholic and an official at Mwanga’s court rebuked the king for the deed and was beheaded for it. Hannington and his companions were among the first Martyrs of Uganda.

About the Death of Bishop James Hannington

THERE are several theories on how Bishop James Hannington died, so we may never know how it happened. It is not even clear who gave the order although there is no doubt that Chief Luba of Bunya carried it out at Kyando, in what is now known as the Mayuge district.

Hannington’s journal, salvaged by a local, indicated that he was tortured for a week after his arrest on October 21st, 1885. He was speared to death on October 29th, 1885.

He wrote: in spite of feeling I was being dragged away to be murdered I sang ‘Safe in the Arms of Jesus’ and laughed at the very agony of my situation. My clothes were torn to pieces so that I was exposed; wet through being dragged on the ground; strained in every limb and for a whole hour expecting instant death, hurried along, dragged, pushed at five miles an hour, until we came to a hut…

Some people believe the Bishop angered Kabaka Mwanga of Buganda by traveling through Busoga, at that time considered a back entrance to the Buganda Kingdom. Traditionally, such an entry, whether by missionaries or traders, was considered subversive.

Little wonder that Bishop James Hannington’s last words were: Go tell Mwanga I have purchased the road to Uganda with my blood.

Kyando is 12km from Mayuge town near the shores of Lake Victoria in Imanyiro county. Despite its historical significance, it is not easy to access, with the bad roads and lack of signposts and tourists need quick-witted drivers ready to make abrupt decisions but Mj Safaris Uganda can offer properly arranged tours to these sites.

Almost 122 years after Bishop Hannington was killed, the site remains unaltered by modernity. The stone on which he was speared is located less than a metre from a footpath that winds through a small maize garden. A short distance down the footpath is a church built in his memory.

Multitudes of Christians throng Kyando every year on October 29th to pray at the site where Bishop Hannington was martyred.

Of particular interest is the pulpit used by Bishop Hannington. It is a huge stone that sits on a rock, tilting as though it will fall any minute, yet it moved an inch since the days before any white man stepped in Uganda.

To get there you have to do a substantial amount of climbing. But when you get there, it becomes obvious why the Bishop chose it. There is a clear view of Nkombe village, Lake Victoria and Mwiri hill in Jinja, Lwanika and the Victoria waters are visible to the south while parts of Iganga and Waitambogwe hill dot the eastern horizon. INTRODUCTION
Murchison falls national park is the largest and oldest park in Uganda located in the north western part end of the Albertine rift valley. It covers the districts of Buliisa, Nwoya ,Kiryandongo and part of Masindi, measuring approximately 3893 square kilometers.
Murchison falls national park is bisected by the Nile the longest river in the world, it also lies on the shores of Lake Albert which is shared by Uganda and DR Congo, lying over the Bunyoro escarpment and around Karuma falls wildlife reserve.
Murchison falls is also known as Kabalega falls and this was the name before Sir Samuel Bekar renaming it to Murchison in reward to his boss then Rodrick Murchison who was he president of the royal geographical society, it’s between Lake kyoga and Lake Albert on the Victoria Nile. HOW TO GET TO MURCHISON FALLS

Murchison falls national park is accessible by road and air from Entebbe international airport to Pakuba airstrip 19km from north of Para safari lodge, and Bugungu airstrip next to Red Chill rest camp and Murchison river lodge. This park has the northern bank and southern bank gates since it’s bisected by river Nile which makes it easier to access from which over direction you drive from.
The northern bank gates consist of the following Wankwar, safari lodge Chobe gate, and Tangi gates via Kampala- pakwach route which crosses the Nile at Karuma falls in the north eastern corner of the park as you access from Kampala.

“This will sustain them for a month as they strengthen patrols to safeguard the ten National Parks and game reserves in Uganda,” said the deputy executive director of Uganda Wildlife Authority(UWA) John Makomboat at the headquarters April 14. “This is a good gesture from AUTO and it’s members. The food donation will supplement the food/sauce requirements of their families for 60 days.”

Adding that tourism was the first victim of the COVID 19 as different sectors in the chain of tourism like aviation, hotels, and game parks have no revenue but are challenged to stay afloat.

“We expect tourism to be the last to recover after the spate of the virus because our source places like the UK, USA, and Asia have been hit badly by the virus,” observed Makombo. “They are also under Lockdown and this has affected their savings.”

While officially handing over the food, AUTO chairman Silver Kayondo lamented about the total Lockdown, in some places across the world that costing their members business valued in billions of shillings.

“We expect a ripple effect of this pandemic which is going to be felt in our midst very badly,” confided Kayondo. “Some of the 600, 000 staff in the industry have lost their jobs as bookings are canceled.”

Kayondo explained that much as there are proposals to promote an Africa to Africa tourist target, many of these countries lack the purchasing power to afford a holiday like their counterparts from the USA, EU, and Asia.

“It is a hard market to exploit because where they come from they also have the Big Five, Mountains and similar vegetation to what we have,” argued Kayondo. “All we have is a niche is the Source of River Nile, Murchison Falls, and Gorilla tracking.”

Contrary to expectations, Uganda Tourism Board CEO Lilly Ajarova has another perspective.

“While tourists from EU, USA, and Asia view Africa as one country,” contends Ajarova. “Our Africa continent counterparts continued coming to Uganda even when the entire world was preventing it because of the Ebola outbreak in distant Liberia and neighboring DR of Congo.”

Adding that, Uganda boasts a niche of bird watching, snowcapped Mount Rwenzori, and National Parks that have won accolades from tourism gurus like National Geographic, CNN, and Travel advisor in the recent past.

“Unfortunately while we are endowed with a population of 1.2b people the continent receives a disappointing 62m of them” cried Ajarova. “What we need is to boost these numbers to between 200-400m traveling within the continent.”

“It is one way of generating revenue without depending solely on tourists from the usual sources. The Tulambule campaign has gained ground but we need more guests to explore our niche tourism products like gorilla tracking, diverse culture, and more than 1000 bird species.”

For Ajarova’s dream to come true, the chairman UNWTO executive council Najib Balala there is a need for connectivity on the continent through open sky policy to increase travelers, trade, and investment.

“We should also address infrastructure development within Africa which includes: roads, marine, and the railway network,” stressed Najib. “Once these are addressed the continent’s economy is bound to be upscaled.”

All in all, Uganda remains the most ideal place to travel to in the entire great lakes region. It offers the cheapest gorilla tracking at $700 while a similar treat goes for $1500 in Rwanda. The challenging experience recently attracted a 95-year-old former Auditor General of Kenya Charles Njonjo. Out of the 300 of these primates, 160 are habituated and are found in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and Mgahinga Forest. In these misty heights are 350 different species of birds and some 120 mammals.

IDDI AMIN DADA AND KAGULU

Politically way back in the 1970’s,This hill was mainly put to use by President Idi Amin Dada. Having discovered the beauty of Kagulu rock hill, President Idi Amin decided to build Ladders on this hill in 1972, Additionally he installed tele communication masts on this very rock to ease his communication with the military troupes in the east and northern region of Uganda.

It is also asserted that he used Kagulu rock as his military base simply because of its strategic location and height.

This really made his attacks successful because it was very easy to notice his enemies from whichever direction. This enabled him to be a very strong fighter and before the end of his reign as president, he was looking forward to turning Kagulu rock into his official military base though this wasn’t attained.

The control of Kagulu rock was later handed over to Mama Kagulu a spiritual lady who leaves on the rock and still leaves to date.

In the first place the rock was a forest with very many wild animals however, But in 1970s during the reign of president Idd Amin Dada, all animals such as hyenas, Impalas, chimpanzees and many others were all shot to death simply because of their negative effect to the society. Not only was it a game park but also a stone Quarrying site it being a rock.

Further more, it was s also asserted that the rock was mineral Rich with mercury among other minerals.

Presently, the economic activities on the rock include animal rearing with a goat farm on top of the rocks, quarrying, community tourism and obtaining of grass for other animals at home.

The locals of Kagulu are happy and hospitable people who have been blessed with hobs arising from Kagulu rock, the fertile soils around the rock which mainly support the growth of tomatoes and watermelon.

River Nile explored, but not exploited

More efforts. As Uganda struggles to attract four million tourists annually, one of the top tourist destinations that remains unexploited is River Nile. A report published in 2013 indicated that there is potential to develop the source of the Nile into a world-class recreation center, writes Eric Ntalumbwa.

Cam Mcleay, a New Zealand adventurer led the first expedition to travel up the Nile to its source. Mcleay and his wife founded Adrift Company in 1992.
They both ran rafting operations on River Zambezi, the Blue Nile and other rivers in Ethiopia, Turkey, Nepal, and South America.

However, in their 30 years of rafting and kayaking (a kayak is a canoe-like boat in which the paddler sits facing forward, legs in front, using a double-bladed paddle to pull front-to-back on one side and then the other in rotation) around the globe, they had never seen anything like the Nile in Uganda.

He says: “There were rapids on a scale I had never seen before. Bigger, safer and more exciting than the mighty Zambezi. When we ran the first commercial rafting trips on the Nile in August 1996, I knew that the rapids in the gorges below Victoria Falls which had earned the reputation as the most exciting, one-day raft trip in the world were no match.

Mcleay adds: “Not only does the Nile offer mighty rapids, but big slow-moving pools between the rapids allow for recovery time when the rafts flip or passengers fall overboard.”
He describes the Nile as a safe haven with heavily forested islands, and prolific vegetation, which makes it home to hundreds of remarkable bird species, monitor lizards, large colonies of bats and numerous species of unusual fish.

Mcleay ceased to be the owner of Adrift. Ninety percent of his staff then were Ugandans and most of them came from villages around the river.

After foreseeing the potential to create more tourism products, in 2003, Adrift constructed the Nile High Bungee tower, near Jinja Nile Resort, above the Nile.
He says the skills were largely transferable, and a handful of staff was trained in operating the Bungy tower safely.

Bungee jumping

Mcleay said: “The most dangerous part of the bungee jumping or rafting is driving between Kampala and Jinja. I felt that Uganda needed to promote adventures that are unique. In 1986, I climbed the Rwenzori, mountains from Zaire and I knew the tourism potential that surrounds River Nile.”

Today, river surfing, whitewater kayaking, rafting, horse riding, quad biking, zip-lining, sundowners are some of the unusual and exciting activities along the Nile, despite the fact that Adrift shut down Bungee Jump in 2017.

The unexploited wonder

Following the declaration ceremony on February 11, 2013, in Arusha, Tanzania Dr. Phillip Imler, the president of Seven Wonders stated: “The Nile is more than a historical wonder that engages most of the countries.”

Nile River is the longest river in the world which flows through nine countries, namely Egypt, Tanzania, Rwanda, Uganda, Burundi, Kenya, Ethiopia, Sudan, and Zaire. Flowing northward through the tropical climate of eastern Africa and into the Mediterranean sea, the Nile is not known for wildlife but the Nile crocodile, the largest crocodile in Africa and one of the largest in the world, weighing up to 680kgs.

The Potential of the Nile

Dennis Ntege, the managing director of Raft Uganda, says marine tourism has not yet been fully exploited yet it has the potential to earn Uganda revenue.

Talk about gorilla tracking and everyone’s mind gets pregnant with great expectations about destination Kisoro in southwestern Uganda which is endowed with precarious cliffs besides being perched at more than 6000 meters above sea level. Not until recently, it was very hard to get there but now the government of Uganda has worked a lot on the roads connecting most tourist destinations.

But what has not changed is the story of a sharp bend baptized “Corner ye mbwa” (Dog’s Corner.) The narrative still humors many a listener traveling 550km from Kampala City and beyond. There was a hunting dog that was chasing an edible wild animal (rabbit.) Like fate would have it, the pawed chaser failed to brake when his target made a U-turn on a steep hill in a sharp bend. Instead, the pawed skidded down like a sack of potatoes. Gossip has it that it was later found, by the owner, in the war-torn DR Congo.

Today the corner has been cemented and painted red. To those who have ever heard the oral literature, it conjures a mental image of either the proverbial dog or its victim having bled there. At this point, one wonders why the spot is popular for photo opportunities. Could it be the legendary dog or scenic valleys? Huge motorists like Bismakan, Horizon, Post Bus and Jaguar, as if afraid of suffering the dog’s fate, they slow down. Especially now that the road has been tar marked. Commuters in airplanes miss this thrilling narrative in their 45-60 minutes’ flight from Entebbe International Airport.

By road, this trip to South Western Uganda is hard to delete from memory and it will leave any traveler poorer by between sh100, 000- sh400, 000 or more footing the transport and accommodation bills. The menu of attractions comprises of the scenic view of Lake Bunyonyi whose name translates to – a place where small birds tweet. If you have an sh5, 000 of Uganda currency, look carefully at a photo of that water embedded on it covering an area of 60km.

The Kisoro Mayor Richard Ndyana says Kisoro is the cradle of nature and he suspects Winston Churchill had it in mind when he baptized Uganda the Pearl of Africa.

“The list of attractions comprises primates, more than 300 species of birds and a number of reptiles,” Ndyana exhausts fingers on his palms while counting. “The wealth of history can take you seven days to exhaust. Then there is the Bakiga and Batwa culture.”

Ndyana urges a cease-fire in the raging war between humans and wildlife because either party needs the other to survive. Summing up, the habitat of wildlife is shrinking rapidly as the population explodes.

“We do not want a 1986 repeat performance of the last rhino was shot dead and the species was declared extinct,” asserted Ndyana. “Residents here treasure the gorillas and tourism as a whole. Property prices have shot sky high because moneyed developers are buying off huge chunks of land at exorbitant prices. The advantage is that they plant trees instead of chopping the property into small plots.”

One such developer is the governor Bank of Uganda Mathew Mutebile who has translocated: antelopes, zebras, and waterbucks to Kyahungye one of the 29 islands. On it are grass thatched accommodation facilities. It is the only one that is connected with hydroelectricity power on the national grid.

Being the role model of the area, there are pork roasting places called Governor and Rolex bakers named after him. Pupils of Little Angels Primary School, who go to school by boat, want to be governors when they grow up.

Asked why the water is visually green the Kabale District Resource officer Rogers Akatwijuka says it is because of the poor farming methods by a growing population living on the shores of Lake Bunyonyi.

“This increased silting has cost the lake depth of about tens meters in the last ten years,” laments Akatwijuka. “Stones are being broken for use in the construction industry as hills are being farmed and trees are cut down. All these have negative effects on the ecosystem”

The District Environment Officer Pamela Katushabe said there is a need for the private sector and government bodies responsible to link hands and salvage the water body.

“This lake contributes to microclimate regulation and global hydrological systems besides being a cultural center for the indigenous clans in Kigezi,” said Katusha. “We are challenged to halt illegal activities such as car washing expose marine life to lead, diesel, and oil from vehicles besides garbage dumping that pollutes our lake.”

Kisoro changes

A lot has changed but the traditional weekly market which suffices for a Super Market enables visitors to stumble on intricately woven baskets, wood carvings of gorillas and monkeys to take home as mementos. A sip of obushera (millet porridge) all day long will prove that old habits die hard given the variety of soft drinks on counters.

Kisoro is abuzz with hotels and Safari Lodges. Most of them are named after a folklore, a stone in existence because of volcanic history and birds if not gorillas or any other primate. While there gorilla tracking, Batwa Trail, Bird Watching and a Nature Walk thrill many a visitor. Among the big names that have been there lately are former Kenya AG Charles Njonjo before he celebrated his 100th birthday and property guru Sudhir Ruparelia. They come on the heels of Microsoft …

But like many a regular traveler when one thinks they have exhausted the menu of attractions, Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) unfurled a new attraction that leaves many visitors breathless and sweating profusely. It is Supreme Adventure Park Bunyonyi zip line cable that enables those with guts of steel to zip above one of the deepest lakes in the world.

“There is a starter before you venture into crossing the lake,” a guide Nicholas Ninsiima breaks my train of thoughts. “The price ranges between sh40, 000 – sh60, 000 for a treat. Position the harness in the right place or you risk falling.”

This is what I have always seen on television where human beings are challenged to walk on logs, buckets, and balls held together with ropes. This is punctuated by zip-lining to the next challenge and halted by banging a tree cushioned by a foam mattress.

Sharpening the adventure appetite, demonstrations of zippers spinning head down, hands or legs in the water take trigger the confidence of those with water phobia. Pregnant women for 6-8 months are prohibited because of health risks. But I saw Sophie do it with ease. When she landed onshore the kicks of her baby in the extensive stomach were visible as she reassured its safety with her body language.

“Calm down baby all is fine,” she cooed.

Take heed when you want to sample this spine chilling adventure, folks weighing more than 150kg, are strictly not allowed. That limitation aside, a cormorant bird in flight was visibly looking for lunch (fish) at 1:00 pm with its two feet long legs and four feet wings flapping energetically.

“The males and females of that bird look alike,” confided a boatman Nelson Tumushabe. “In UAE these birds are used to catch fish which are twice their weight and bring them to the owners. Given better fish-catching methods, using birds to catch fish, is now a tourist attraction there. These birds have razor-sharp beaks. In Japan, a string is tied around their necks to prevent swallowing. ”

Lake Mburo National Park

Mburo National Park is the second smallest national game park and the nearest park to a town in Uganda. Named after the largest of a collection of five lakes it seats astride 370km squared close to Masaka and Mbarara owns. Minus the area covered by water, it remains with an area of 260km squared. In the waters are six species of fish dominated by Tilapia, Lungfish, Mudfish, and the Halochromic. Folks use hooks at the popular point for fishing called Mazinga.

The name Mburo has its roots from an Ankole legend involving two brothers called Kigarama and Mburo who used to live in the valley. While there, Kigarama had a dream and confided in his brother saying it was a warning from the gods about impending danger.

“We should move or risk our dear lives,” cautioned Kigarama.

But like fate would have it Mburo ignored him and stayed put as his brother moved house higher up a hill. So the Lake was thereafter called Mburo after the naughtier sibling who declined to leave while the hills became known as Kigarama.

Besides that, it is a cassia tree with aphrodisiac qualities. People residing in nearby communities peel off its bark and mix concoctions to boost their libidos.

When it comes to mammals one side of the park has woodland vegetation of acacia savannah punctuated with fast-footed antelopes. By the shores of the lakes are crocodiles, hippos, giraffes and water birds. Lucky guests often spot a sitatunga (antelopes) and papyrus gan Alex. But the place boasts a total of 68 different species of mammals.

A maiden trip to the park with professional birders from the USA, Australia, and the UK was an experience hard to delete from the mind. Birders are a complicated lot to go touring with because as the van gathers momentum one shouts “halt” a boat or vehicle. Binoculars, cameras and other gadgets are pulled out of bags.

“That is a rare white-winged warbler,” says the guide James Mwere for Mj safaris Uganda.

Still, in the same location, Peter Wanders with one eye closed whispers under his breath “I have a wood spotted Dove in my lens.”

In rapid succession comes an African grey hornbill, a black-billed barbet, a blue napped mousebird and a wood hoopoe. Later a Nubian woodpecker, the trilling Cisticola, and Crested Francolin follow suit. The place has a wealth of more than 320 different species of birds. Lucky guests have seen the most sought after Shoebill stork. For birders, the place to be is Miriti and Warukiri swampy valleys.

Come the Boat Ride in Mburo and eyes are treated to lots of swampy shores, rocky outcrops, bush thickets, lakes, acacia trees, hills in a distance and valleys here. UWA double-storied boats are comfortable and can shuttle 20-50 passengers. There are smaller vessels in place for individual or family use.

Invasive species of plants are also seen claiming huge chunks of the habitat in this era of climate change.

But for a conventional tourist, the list of attractions, this smallest park in Uganda is often herds of impalas, hyenas, jackals, zebras, antelopes and rejected buffalos either wallowing in muddy puddles or engaging the vehicle in a staring contest. In one corner antelopes cock their ears instinctively before taking to flight like an arrow released by a bow. The place is teeming with numerous antelopes species. There are elands, the biggest antelope on the Africa continent. Oral literature testifies that roan antelopes once roam the area but can only be talked about elders above 60 years of age. The menu now offers topi, bushbucks, common duiker, oribi, and klipspringer.

This is one park where tourists also enjoy nature walks under the guidance of a ranger to see the salt lick, Rwonyo spot, where different species of mammals congregate. While there a Cultural experience, thanks to efforts of the Uganda Community Tourism Association (UCOTA) in partnership with Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) where more than 13 community groups have been identified around to showcase culture, music, dance and drama of the Banyankole.

Guests can be taught how to herd cattle, milk the cow manually and mingle millet bread in the traditional style. Others get an opportunity to play traditional musical instruments or dance the energetic cultural dance.

The Okuhingira (traditional wedding) ceremony which dates as far back as oral literature can narrate. This is when a bride is officially given away by her family to her grooms. Gifts are ferried in traditional containers like gourds on sticks supported on shoulder blades. Such cultural wealth is available at Igongo Museum.

“Common on the treetops are vervet monkeys and olive baboons,” says Uganda Wildlife Authority seasoned administrator Johnson Masereka. “Every park in Uganda has it’s own: identity, appeal, and thrill. Lake Bunyonyi Uganda

After a Bwindi Impenetrable Forest or Mgahinga Mountain Gorilla tracking one has reason to suck in a deep breath of relief. This is because the terrain is very challenging. When the rains fall it gets very slippery. Fortunately, after eye contact with these primates for 60 minutes, the scene remains engraved on the mind.

“Keep seven meters away from the gorillas or you risk infecting them with human diseases like Coronavirus, flue, and cough,” John Rujuta the guide cautioned us during a briefing. “They share 97 percent of our DNA.”

To get to the treasured primates had to chop grass and trees to clear the way for trackers. This is because the vegetation, their habitat, has to be preserved. We were then given hiking sticks to enable us to balance when sloping down steep cliffs or climb up. It was after one hour walk under the cool canopy that we finally stumbled on the Oruzogo family. The hair on the nape of my neck stood on edge when one naughty scampered very close to me. It looked me in the eyes before proceeding on its way. In a distance were some females with their babies on the back. The Silverback kept a distance from his family but watched every move being made by humans.

An hour here becomes too short while in the presence of these giants. Before you know it, the guide calls your attention and it is time to say “Kwaheri” (bye) to your hosts. Uganda boasts having 50 percent of these endangered primates that are only found in Uganda, Rwanda and the DR of Congo that share the Virunga ranges.

There are things one must have when going to track gorillas. Hiking shoes are a must. On top of that is a good camera, water, food, and a raincoat.

Not so far away from Kisoro is an adventure destined to compete for adventure seekers in Uganda with Jinja which boasts having bangy jumping and white water rafting on River Nile the longest in the world or Lake Victoria largest fresh waterbody in the world respectively. It offers zip lining on top of Africa’s second deepest Lake Bunyonyi. The metallic string drops in height and one’s feet touch the warm water. Some merrymakers have the guts to summersault and holler themselves hoarse while zooming away.

This treat is located on one of the 29 islands called Supreme Adventure Park found a ten-minute drive out of Kabale town which is 408km from Kampala City via Masaka and Mbarara. People with high blood pressure, a history of heart attack and phobia for waters are advised not to dare by a guide Nicholas Ninsiima.

“Make sure your harness is in the right place or you risk meeting your creator here,” cautions the guide Nicholas Nimusiima. “Do not take chances by leaving your support hold. We need you to go back home and tell your followers on social media what you had in Uganda.”

The starter is a challenge to walk on ropes, balance on a bridge of logs stringed on ropes, sidle on upturned buckets. Many hold their breaths for hours before venturing to hold their grips and are propelled to hit a tree cushioned by a six-inch mattress.

A six-foot tightly muscled Nelson Tumushabe and six other attendants are on standby to respond to any emergency.

“There are beef clients who take the challenge and surrender midway,” revealed Tumushabe. “We help the challenged folks get down and opt for alternative adventures that suit their physical state. It is a matter of having fun.”

Akapene Punishment Island

A thirty-minute boat ride is punctuated with a narrative about the old times when girls who got pregnant out of wedlock were brought on Akapene Island and abandoned there to die of hunger or be eaten by wild animals.

“It is now occupied by cormorants and kingfisher birds,” said Tumushabe pointing at two dry trees. “Our forefathers were no-nonsense men. They minded their status in the public eye. If a girl was got a virgin by her the suitor-the family she comes from would be elevated to higher rungs in the community.”

Unlike the other islands surrounding it which are bustling with activity, greenery and human habitation, Akanpene is as quiet as a cemetery. Is it haunted by the ghosts of the girls who lost their lives.

“Anyway no news is bad news,” continued Tumushabe. “The poor guys of the times without dowry to pay for a spouse would keep an eye on Akapene Island. The moment girls were delivered there, they would also pounce and take them in their custody.”

The guide leaves his listeners wondering whether some of these swam to the mainland and begun another life as single mothers. The question that is often asked is why the culprits who impregnated the girls were left Scot free as the old adage has it.

Community tour

A casual walk among the community is a revelation of how folks here while away their time. As expected of fisher communities the men are randy. They love their obushera (millet porridge) beer, women and making money.

“The Obushera is believed to be a libido booster,” whispers a pub attendant Ahakira Ayineplan. “That is why most women here have more than seven children by the time they celebrate their 40th birthday. The locally brewed gin just makes the men’s tongues able to say sweet words that seduce the hardest woman to woo.”

Nature walk Around Lake Bunyonyi

A nature walk offers the tourist a bird’s view of Lake Bunyonyi from several angles. There are chances of stealing a glance of the yellow yolk like sun setting at the horizon where the earth meets the sky. A chat with the blacksmith called John Irumba who still makes knives, arrowheads and wicker lamps was a revelation of evolution and development.

“Before the missionaries and explorers came to Uganda we had a life,” explains Irumba. “Can you believe the are traditional birth attendants who delivered children by C section. They used knives made by the blacksmith of the times. We had endeku (gourd) to sip our entulire and obushera.”
